Caspian Oil & Gas 2012: Still the focus for the world’s “oil elite”
The 19th International Caspian Oil & Gas Exhibition and Conference Incorporating Refining and Petrochemicals was held in Baku. As the largest event in the oil industry in the Caspian region, Caspian Oil and Gas 2012 brought together the leading experts and major players in the region’s oil industry. Three hundred and four companies from 35 countries was demonstrating their products at Baku Expo Centre. The exhibition is organized by the British company, ITE Group plc, and its partner in Azerbaijan, Iteca Caspian LLC.
The high status of the Caspian Oil & Gas exhibition is corroborated by the annual participation in the opening ceremony of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, His Excellency Ilham Aliyev. In his welcome speech, the head of state stressed the international importance of this event. He noted that the exhibition, first held in 1994, has allowed Azerbaijan to reveal its great oil potential to the world. Just a few months ago, after the last Caspian Oil & Gas Exhibition and Conference, the “Contract of the Century” was concluded in the country.
In his speech, senior advisor of ITE Group Plc., Sir Andrew Wood, mentioned the notable increase in the number of Azerbaijani participants at Caspian Oil and Gas (75 local companies are present this year). “Over the past 20 years, the oil and gas sector had undergone significant changes. The exhibition had also been an essential event for ITE Group, the largest organizer of international exhibitions. I would like to congratulate the participants and to express my special gratitude to the leader of the Republic for his support of ITE Group and for all the important events that have been held under our management”, summarized Sir Andrew Wood.
This was followed by the reading of the letters of greeting sent by the president of the USA, Mr Barack Obama, and by the British Prime Minister, Mr David Cameron. Various VIP guests were in attendance at the opening ceremony. During the VIP tour of the exhibition, Mr Ilham Aliyev visited the key exhibits demonstrating new oil and gas equipment (SOCAR, BP and Petkim), and learned about innovative technologies in the fields of oil production and the transportation of energy resources, and existing and future oil and gas projects in the region.
National stands from Great Britain, Germany, China, Russia and Turkey were present at the exhibition. The number of companies from the CIS, Europe and East Asia has markedly increased this year. Vietnamese companies were also making their debut at the show. Over 40% of the display space at the exhibition is occupied by international companies, most of whom are regular exhibitors at Caspian Oil & Gas. Foreign participants occupied 59% of the exhibition space; the remaining area was allocated to local manufacturers and representative offices of foreign companies. Furthermore, 10% of the exhibition area was occupied by new companies who have never before entered the Azerbaijani market.
Overall, the exhibition has grown by 15% and covers the following topics: innovative technologies in the fields of oil production and the transportation of energy resources; oil and gas equipment; oil and gas storage; and existing and future oil and gas projects in the region. The difference in this year’s exhibition is that a large percentage of participants have increased the size of their exhibits and are demonstrating a completely new design concept in their exhibition stands.
Traditional support for the Caspian Oil & Gas project is provided by the Ministry of Industry and Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR). The following partners of ITE Group Plc. have also been involved in the project: ITE LLC Moscow (Russia), EUF (Turkey), GIMA (Germany), ITE China (China) and ITE Gulf (UAE); all of which have been actively attracting international companies to participate in the exhibition in Azerbaijan.
Speaking of sponsors of the exhibition, this year the list of sponsors includes 21 companies: the general sponsor of Caspian Oil & Gas 2012 is BP Azerbaijan, and the gold sponsors are SOCAR and Andrade Gutierrez. The following companies were also providing sponsorship: Caspian Geophysical, Conoco Phillips, Cross Caspian Oil and Gas Logistics, Det Norske Veritas, Ernst & Young, IGI POSEIDON S.A., Inpex Corporation, McDermott Caspian Contractors, MESC, Nobel Oil LTD, OMV Aktiengesellschaft, RWE, Statoil, Salans, TAP, Total E&P Azerbaijan, Velosi, and Vietnam Oil & Gas Group (Petrovietnam). Azerfon LLC, Azerbaijan Airlines JSC (AZAL), Greenwich Travel Club, Hilton Baku and Caucasus Point Hotel are also among the partners of the exhibition and conference in 2012.
Thus, despite the considerable longevity of the exhibition and conference, it is still the focus for the world’s “oil elite”. Next year, Caspian Oil & Gas will celebrate its 20th anniversary. This is particularly symbolic as this momentous event will coincide with the 90th anniversary of the birth of our National Leader, Heydar Aliyev, who was at the forefront of developing the exhibition. The 20th anniversary of Caspian Oil and Gas will be a truly momentous occasion and will be distinguished by its magnitude and festive atmosphere. The organizers are planning a special programme of events which will accompany the work of Caspian Oil & Gas in 2013.
