US energy department and eu recognizes importance of agreement on gas transit between Turkey and Azerbaijan

TEXT:"US and EU recognized importance of the agreement on gas transit signed between Turkey and Azerbaijan on October 25, 2011, which will become one more step towards launching of the South Corridor project," says the joint statement of the US Energy Department and European Union.

The document released by press office of the U.S. Department of States says that "the energy council US-EU expects completion of commercial agreements with the Shah-Deniz-2 consortium, which will allow opening of the sources of gas deliveries to the South Corridor.

The statement also says that the Energy Council supports creation of "a wide-scale infrastructure, which will provide a sufficient volume of gas."

The statement mentioned that Russia is a part of Europe and world energy. The US-EU Energy Council urged Moscow to implement taxation reforms and ensure transparent investments in the energy sector as well as open energy markets.

"US and EU welcome Ukraine's joining the energy community on February 1, 2011. Ukraine plays an important role in safeguarding European energy security and it should strengthen trade and economic ties with Europe," the statement says.

"Energy Council believes that Ukraine must reform its gas industry for the international financial institutions and private sector to invest into upgrade of the gas transit system of Ukraine, including reform of local gas prices to make Naftogas Ukraine company to reimburse expenses," says the US-EU Energy Council.

The statement urged Ukraine to pass law on division of products to attract international investments into development of energy resources of the country as well as develop energy efficiency and resources of renewable sources of energy.

The statement says that US and EU expect Libya to be again a reliable supplier of oil and natural gas to Europe.

On November 28, 2011 the US-EU Energy Council met under the chairmanship of U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, US Energy Secretary Stephen Chu, Catherine Ashton, EU high representative for foreign policy, and Gunter Ettinger, European Energy Commissar. Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Beata Stelmakh attended the meeting as representative of the country chairing the European Union.
