Postshow release of Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition and Conference 2013
The Caspian Oil & Gas Exhibition and Conference took place at the Baku Expo Centre from 4 to 7 June 2013. The show’s 20th anniversary fell on a significant date – 90 years since the birth of Azerbaijan’s National Leader, Heydar Aliyev.
The first exhibition was held in 1994 on the eve of the signing of the Contract of the Century, an agreement which defined the main development areas for the Caspian Basin’s hydrocarbon resources. At that point, Heydar Aliyev supported the initiative of holding Azerbaijan’s first oil and gas exhibition, considering it “a good platform for attracting global oil and gas companies to the development of the country’s oil and gas industry.” Since then, Caspian Oil & Gas has been a meeting place for leading oil, gas and energy industry professionals where memoranda, agreements, and contracts for future cooperation are signed. The Ministry of Industry and Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and SOCAR both provide invaluable support to the event.
The President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, again heading up the official opening ceremony of the exhibition and conference, congratulated all the participants, visitors and organisers on this important anniversary. “Over 20 years, Azerbaijan has come a long way, and successes have been achieved in the energy sector,” he said, stressing how difficult it is to overstate the exhibition’s importance against the development of Azerbaijan’s oil and gas industry. “It is not by chance that the contract signed in 1994 is known as the Contract of the Century. Today – in the 21st century – we can say that this document has become the ‘Contract of Two Centuries’, because the agreement on the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli fields has lost none of its relevance today... in this context, Caspian Oil & Gas 2013, which has been able to embody the realities of two centuries in its exhibition presentations and which has become a symbol of the historical transformations of the country, is another important achievement,” said the president.
Richard Morningstar, United States Ambassador to Azerbaijan, read out a letter from President Barack Obama to the President and people of Azerbaijan: “I would like to offer my best wishes on the holding of the 20th Caspian Oil and Gas exhibition in Baku, and mention in particular Azerbaijan’s role as a leading supplier of gas to Europe.” Charles Hendry, Trade Envoy to Azerbaijan, also read out a letter from the British Prime Minister, David Cameron.
Kakha Kaladze, Georgian Minister of Energy; Gunnar Oom, State Secretary of the Swedish Ministry of Trade; Urban Rusnak, Secretary General, Energy Charter; Annageldi Mammetyazov, Deputy Minister of Petroleum Industry and Natural Resources of Turkmenistan; and others took part in the event’s official opening ceremony. During a VIP tour of the exhibition, these and other high-level guests visited the main exhibition sectors and saw the stands of SOCAR, BP, Statoil, Total, Saipem, RusNeft, Caspian Drilling Company, TPAO, Halliburton, ABEMDA, OMV and other exhibitors.
The exhibition brought together 294 exhibitors from 26 countries, located in three of Baku Expo Centre’s pavilions and in its outdoor exhibition space. Exhibitor numbers increased by 25% and exhibition space by 22% from last year, and Germany, China, Russia, Turkey and the UK presented national groups. 20% of companies were newcomers to Azerbaijan, and domestic companies made up 30% of all exhibitors. The size of the contract was announced at the signing ceremony by Rovnag Abdullaev, head of SOCAR.
Additional material related to the anniversary of Caspian Oil & Gas was contained in the event’s print materials, primarily the official exhibition and conference catalogue and the Caspian Oil & Gas Daily News, which covered the work of the exhibition and conference, publishing interviews with exhibitors and event statistics. All the latest event news was posted on the official websites, www.cog.az and www.oilgasconference.az, and a special issue of the Caspian Energy magazine was published by the event’s longstanding media partner Caspian Energy International Media Group, on the occasion of the event’s 20th anniversary. With all their diversity, vibrancy and content, the 20th anniversary events taking place at the exhibition and conference helped to create an atmosphere of celebration, as did the event’s creative marketing campaign.
A programme of additional events was also planned by the organisers. A tree and flower planting ceremony took place in Baku’s Botanical Gardens to mark the 90th anniversary of the birth of Heydar Aliyev, with exhibitors and delegates taking part, and a stand in memory of Heydar Aliyev was built at the exhibition reflecting the historic moments of his participation in the exhibition.
The organisers began the tradition of presenting awards to the best students of oil-related disciplines at the 15th anniversary Caspian Oil & Gas event five years ago, and this year Mamieva Giulai won a special Caspian Oil & Gas scholarship for her achievement in gaining full marks in the entrance examination to the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy.
An exhibition of the work of the artist Sabir Çopuroğlu – who paints using oil as a medium – also took place, and students of the Kids Art gallery painted in front of event participants and visitors. All companies that have taken part for 20 years were presented with commemorative certificates and souvenirs.
Caspian Oil & Gas is a celebration of the official oil strategy of Azerbaijan founded by Heydar Aliyev and successfully continued by Ilham Aliyev. The organisers are confident that having passed the 20-year mark, the exhibition will continue to be the hallmark of the achievements of the region’s oil and gas sector, and a platform for forging business links and developing new prospects for cooperation.
Caspian Oil & Gas is organised by ITE Group and Iteca Caspian. ITE Group’s partner companies – ITE Moscow, EUF (Turkey) and GiMA (Germany) – worked hard to attract international participants. SafeLife is the official security partner of all events held by Iteca Caspian in 2013, the Jumeirah Bilgah Beach Hotel and Qafqaz Point Hotel are the official hotels, and Greenwich Travel Club is the official tour operator.
